Foodbank (NSW), founded in 1992 is a not-for-profit organisation that collects unwanted food and re-distributes it through various welfare agencies and distribution modes to people in need. In response to an increasing need for food relief services, the project called for the design of a new purpose-built distribution facility to cater for the increased demand and larger storage needs of Foodbank.
Located in the Glendenning Logistics Estate, the project is strategically located just minutes from the M7 arterial linking the site to Greater Western Sydney and the major transport corridors.
The project involved the development of a 15,000sqm site to service the growing demands of the end user. Working with the clients, Grayspace Architects developed a purpose built facility comprising 500 sqm of office space, 1,200sqm of refrigerated food storage areas, and 6,000sqm of warehousing.
The design response provided an industrial warehouse and distribution facility which can be divided into two different facilities for short term leasing and to enable future expansion capacity. The project included construction of heavy-duty hardstands for car parking and access for B-Double and forklift vehicles through a series of loading docks as well as general landscaping.
In addition, the project incorporated a 250kW solar panel system which at the time was the largest solar installation on a commercial building in the state.
